Benni McCarthy was recently appointed as Manchester United’s new attacking coach for the first team as he looks to establish a coaching career that rivals that of his playing career.

The former FC Porto striker is the only South African to have won the UEFA Champions League trophy, arguably the biggest of the 13 titles that he has held aloft.

Another African forward who won Europe’s premier club competition is Samuel Eto’o. Like McCarthy, the Cameroonian also won the Champions League under Jose Mourinho, with Inter Milan during the 2009/10 season.

In fact, no other player from the continent has more UCL titles than the forward, who got his hands on that silverware three times.

Eto’o is arguably the greatest African export of all time, having scored countless goals during his time in Spain, England, Italy, Russia, Turkey and Qatar. The two-time Africa Cup of Nations winner won 16 trophies during his 22-year professional career.

The former Barcelona man also won the CAF African Player of the Year honour four times, and the only player to equal that feat is Ivory Coast’s Yaya Toure.

A dynamic midfielder in his playing days, Toure enjoyed a trophy-laden career that saw him become a multiple-time league winner with both Manchester City and the Blaugrana.

He also led his country to their first AFCON title in 23 years when the west Africans beat Ghana 9-8 on penalties in 2015. It was his only international trophy, though, and one of the 17 he won during his playing career.
